Marlin Softball Wins Two

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The first-place Virginia Wesleyan College softball team stayed atop the standings Sunday with a 6-5, 3-1 sweep of visiting Lynchburg College Sunday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.

LC scored in the first inning to open game one as freshman Jessi Hall singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single from senior Taylor Walker. The Hornets opened a 4-0 advantage with three runs in the top of the third. Sophomore Melanie Tenney and Hall each singled, and Amber Ingram plated Tenney with another single. A Marlin error loaded the bases with one out, and senior Meagan Fredenberg came through with a two-run single.

The Marlin offense came to life in the bottom of the third, scoring runs in each of the last five innings. Trailing 5-4 in the top of the seventh, the Hornets would rally. Tenney singled and scored on a two-out single from Walker to tie the game at five-all. VWC won the game in the bottom of the frame on a base-hit from Brianna Bertovich to score Jaclyn Quinn.

Lynchburg opened the nightcap in similar fashion to the first game, scoring a run in the first inning following a Hall single and stolen base and Walker RBI single. It was the only run that Marlin starter MacKenzie Creech would allow, throwing a complete-game six hitter with five strikeouts. She was supported by a single run in the third and two more in the fifth inning.

Walker had two hits for Lynchburg and freshman Skylar Seals ripped a double. Freshman Kaitlyn Morris was the tough-luck loser, scattering seven hits and one walk while giving up two earned runs.

Virginia Wesleyan improves to 13-1 in the ODAC and 24-9 overall. LC is now 16-16 and 7-5 in conference play. The Hornets, sitting in fifth place in the league standings, travel to Sweet Briar College Tuesday at 3 p.m. for another ODAC doubleheader.
