Hornets Sweep Guilford on Senior Day

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team closed out its 2012 regular season in style Wednesday, sweeping Guilford College 8-0 (five innings) and 4-1 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader. The Hornets' three seniors were honored in a pre-game ceremony.

The opener was scoreless through the first two and a half frames, as Hornet freshman pitcher Hope Johnson and Quaker senior Jessica Burcham both cruised in the early going. Following a Guilford error, LC had runners on first and second with two down in the bottom of the third. Senior shortstop Taylor Walker doubled to score one run and freshman Amber Ingram drove in both runners with a single. Senior catcher Meagan Fredenberg followed with a two-run home run to center field to put the Hornets up 5-0 after three. Sophomore Michaela Munday led off the fourth with a single and freshman Skylar Seals delivered a two-run blast to left field to make the score 7-0. Walker would later drive in another insurance run in the frame. Ingram relieved Johnson in the top of the fifth and worked a perfect inning.

Johnson allowed just one hit and no walks in four innings of scoreless work in the circle. Walker was the only batter with two hits in the game, while Fredenberg, Walker, Ingram and Seals each had two RBI.

The second game also featured quality pitching, as neither team got on the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth inning. Freshman Jessi Hall walked, stole second and scored on an Ingram single to put LC ahead 1-0 after five. LC scored three insurance runs in the sixth, highlighted by a three-run triple from Hall. Guilford threatened in the top of the seventh, but freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Morris escaped a jam.

Ingram scattered five hits and allowed no walks or runs over her six innings while striking out three. She also had two hits at the plate. Cynthia Hayes and Sloane King each had two singles for Guilford (17-23/4-14 ODAC).

Lynchburg finishes the regular season 21-17 and 12-6 in league play. The ODAC Championship Tournament will begin Friday, with the complete bracket to be released by the conference office later this evening.
