#19 Captains Use Second-Half Run to Defeat Hornets

LYNCHBURG, VA—The #19 Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team used an 8-0 run in the second-half to defeat Lynchburg College 14-10 in non-conference action on Saturday.  The Hornets had the advantage with 20 minutes left, but could not hold on at Shellenberger Field.

LC opened up the game with Katie Seidel's first goal of the season coming off of a break.  CNU responded with three straight scores to take a two-goal lead, but Lynchburg would not stay down.  Bri Slate, playing in her first game of the season, scored two quick ones.

Just as momentum swung in LC's favor, Becca Geist won the draw control and put the ball in the back of the net within ten seconds, giving the Captains another advantage.  CNU would tally another, once again gaining a two-goal lead.

Lynchburg made another mini-run, tying the game with scores by Kendall Adkin and Katherine Francis.  However, much like after the first run, Ashton Marshall scored straight after corralling the draw control, giving CNU a slim 6-5 lead at the half.

After the intermission, the Hornets came out firing, connecting on three-unanswered goals, with two of them coming from Slate.  Christopher Newport called a timeout after the second tally from Slate, and would not look back.  Eight straight goals, with the first four coming as free position shots, gave CNU the lead for good.  Seidel added her second of the day late and Julie Will scored during a player-up situation, but it was not enough, as the Captains held on for the 14-10 win.

CNU (3-1 overall) held a 19-7 advantage in draw controls, with Lauren King grabbing six and Geist recording five.  Marshall tallied five goals on the evening and Elena Obregon recorded a hat-trick as well.  Slate led Lynchburg with four goals and goalie Hailey Bossert stopped 12 shots in the loss.

The Hornets (1-1) will be off until Thursday as they open up their Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) slate with a home game against Hollins University.  The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
