Hornet Softball Splits Home Opener with Ferrum

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team rallied to win the first game of a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday against Ferrum College 5-4 in 10 innings but dropped the second game 7-2.

Ferrum scored one run in the third inning of the first game and added two more in the fifth off a two-run homer from Shelbie Hall. LC trailed 3-0 entering the seventh inning and the Panthers recorded two quick outs. Sophomore Kacey Clary singled and scored on a double from junior Nicole Shipp and two Ferrum miscues led to two more Hornet runs and extra innings. Each team scored in the eighth before the Hornets won it in the 10th. Shipp was placed on second to start the inning and went to third on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Jessi Hall. Freshman shortstop Nicole Riley followed with an RBI single to right center field to score Shipp and end the game. Sophomore Elizabeth Fioretti worked five innings of hitless relief to earn the win, her first of the season. Riley and Clary each had two hits for LC, while Shelbie Hall was 2-5 with three RBI for Ferrum.

The nightcap was scoreless for the first three innings before Ferrum plated one run in the fourth, four in the fifth and two more in the sixth. LC scored its runs in the bottom of the seventh, as freshman Amy Bresson and sophomore Olivia Donohue each doubled and Jessi Hall drove in Donohue to make the final score 7-2. Donohue was 2-3 for LC, while Aiyana Lew, Sadie Wallace and Lindsey Slover each had two base-hits for the Panthers. Kaitlyn Culler threw a complete game for the win for Ferrum (9-5).

The Hornets (5-3) are slated to compete at the Salisbury University Tournament this Friday and Saturday.
