Hornet Softball Sweeps Methodist in Doubleheader 5-0 and 8-5
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader Sunday against visiting Methodist University by scores of 5-0 and 8-5 in non-conference play.
The Hornets got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Nicole Riley singled with one out and was sacrificed to second base by Amber Sulter. Michaela Munday singled to plate Riley and give LC a 1-0 lead. Lynchburg broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth with four runs. Kayla St. John opened the frame with a solo home run down the left field line. Jessi Hall and Melanie Tenney followed with bunt singles, and Danielle Powell brought both home with a single. Another run scored later in the inning on a Monarch miscue to make the score 5-0.
Junior Hope Johnson scattered four hits to earn the complete-game shutout. She struck out six.
Lynchburg jumped out quick in the nightcap, pushing five runs across the plate in the first inning. Hall led off with a single and scored on a Tenney two-run home run to left center. Powell singled and scored on a double from Skylar Seals, who crossed the plate after a St. John two-bagger. Amber Ingram singled with one out to plate St. John and make the score 5-0. Allyson Aycock hit a two-run home run in the top of the second to cut the lead to 5-2. The Hornets added another run in the third, as St. John scored on a Lauren Smith groundout. Tenney doubled in the sixth to drive in two more runs to give her four RBI for the game.
Amber Ingram earned the win in the circle to improve to 2-0, working six innings of one hit ball, allowing no earned runs with six strikeouts and only one walk. Hall, St. John, Tenney and Smith all had two hits.
The Hornets (3-1) are back home next Sunday for another non-conference twin-bill against Greensboro College.
