Lynchburg Sweeps Doubleheader against Greensboro

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team swept both ends of a non-conference doubleheader Sunday against visiting Greensboro College by scores of 12-0 in five innings and 6-3.

In the opener, Lynchburg went up 1-0 in the first as Jessi Hall scored on a Kayla St. John single. The Hornets broke the game open in the bottom of the third with six runs, the big shot coming from a three-run blast by Danielle Powell. St. John, Amber Ingram and Nicole Shipp later each drove in a run. LC plated five insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth. Melanie Tenney and Powell each singled with one out, and Seals and St. John followed with singles themselves to plate both runners. Nicole Riley doubled to bring Seals home, and Ingram and Shipp also had RBI singles in the frame.

Hope Johnson allowed just one hit and one walk in her four innings to earn the win, striking out five. St. John finished 3-3 with two runs and two RBI, while Powell slammed two hits with three RBI and two runs. Tenney, Seals and Riley each had two hits and Hall stole three bases.

Lynchburg opened the scoring in game two with two runs in the second. Shipp led off with a walk, and Hall reached base on an error on a sacrifice attempt. Tenney sacrificed the runners to second and third, and both scored on a Powell single. The Hornets added four runs in the fifth inning, the big hit being a two-run single from Ingram. The Pride's Sarah Connolly lofted a two-run home run to center field to make the score 6-2, and GC added one more run in the seventh.

Ingram threw a complete-game four-hitter, walking just one with four strikeouts. Allyson Yeager had two base hits for Greensboro (8-6).

The Hornets (5-1) open Old Dominion Athletic Conference play this week, making the short trek across town to face Randolph College Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
