Hornets Split Doubleheader with #16 Emory

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader Thursday against 16th-ranked Emory University (GA), dropping the first game 9-1 in six innings and taking game two 13-8.

Kayla St. John singled and plated Melanie Tenney to give LC an early 1-0 lead in the opener. Emory exploded for five runs in the top of the third, as Megan Light hit a three-run home run and Tara Fallahee followed later in the frame with a two-run blast. EU added single runs in the fourth and fifth and Hannah Sendel made the lead 9-1 in the sixth with a two-run home run.

Amanda Kardys worked all six innings in the circle for Emory to improve to 19-1 on the season. St. John had two hits for LC, while Light had three hits and three RBI for the Eagles.

Emory scored four runs in the first inning of the nightcap, but LC countered with three in the bottom of the first, two on a home run by Amber Ingram. Lynchburg erased a 7-4 deficit in the fourth inning with three scores, two on a Danielle Powell double. The game was decided by a huge Hornet six-run fifth inning, aided by an Eagle error to start off the frame. The key hits in the inning were a Tenney two-run single and a St. John two-run double.

Ingram also earned the win in the circle, allowing seven earned runs, but just one in the final three innings. Skylar Seals went 3-4 for Lynchburg, and St. John and Ingram each had two hits and combined for five RBI. Micah Scharff was 3-4 with a home run for Emory (28-6).

The Hornets (14-6) are back in action Saturday at 2 p.m., hosting Emory & Henry College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader.
