Hornets Honor Seniors and Hold on for 10-8 win over Eagles

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College women's team scored eight goals in the first half and held on for the 10-8 win over Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Bridgewater College on Saturday.  Prior to the game, LC honored seniors Paige Gadsby, Caroline Kilby, Brianna LaMarca, and Bri Slate for their work over the past four years.

The Hornets got off to a quick start in the first half, with Caroline Carozza scoring the first goal of the game at 27:05 off a pass from Slate.  Slate continued to impact on her senior day with a goal of her own at 26:19.  Bridgewater responded with two goals to tie the score at two-all.

LC responded as Katherine Francis and Kilby scored 39 seconds apart to put the advantage back at two.  The Eagles had two good opportunities on the next possession, but both shots, including a free-position shot were stopped by Hailey Bossert.  Kilby responded after that save by scoring her second of the afternoon.  Then it was an all-senior affair on the next goal, as Kilby hit Slate who tallied her second of the game.  Francis fired her second in the back of the net at 10:27 to give the Hornets a 7-2 lead.  Katie Freeman stopped the run with a goal at 9:28, but Francis completed her hat trick one minute later which was the final score of the half.

Coming out of the intermission with an 8-3 lead, Carozza once again opened up the scoring, notching her second off the helper from Laura Meisner.  Peggy Russell put her shot in the back of the cage for BC at 24:01 and afterwards the goalies took over.  Rachel Gruber made a save for Bridgewater and Bossert stopped two free position shots and one more.  Jenna Devilbiss finally broke through at 14:10 to put the Eagles deficit at 9-5.

Once again the defenses stepped up and kept both teams off the scoreboard until 7:44 when Carozza fired her third of the afternoon.  Jesse Colligan answered back at 7:07.  It was another four minutes before Bridgewater cut the lead to the smallest it had been since halfway through the first period.  Clare Palmero-Re tallied her second of the game at 3:02 and BC called a timeout to discuss its final actions.  Colligan won the ensuing draw control and Freeman scored her second to cut the lead to two, but BC would get no closer and Lynchburg would leave with the win.

Colligan, Freeman, and Palmero-Re each had two goals for the Eagles (5-10 overall, 2-6 ODAC)a who outshot the Hornets 34-24.  Bossert tied a season-high of 14 saves.

LaMarca and Gadsby each helped to shut the Eagles offense down on their Senior Day.  Kilby and Slate both scored two goals while assisting on one more, with Corozza and Francis providing the other tallies.

Lynchburg (7-7, 6-3) hosts its final home game of the regular season on Wednesday.  The Hornets will take on Guilford College (9-4, 7-1) at 4 p.m. in the last conference game of the year and it will have implications on the upcoming tournament.
