LC Softball Sweeps Roanoke 1-0 and 4-3

SALEM, VA - The Lynchburg College softball team recorded its second doubleheader sweep this weekend, recording 1-0 (8 innings) and 4-3 victories Sunday at Roanoke College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) twin bill.

Junior Hope Johnson was spectacular in the circle for LC in game one, shutting out the Maroons for all eight innings and allowing just three hits and no walks with nine strikeouts. Kelly Higbie equaled Johnson for Roanoke until LC scored in the eighth, giving up only three hits and three walks.

In extra innings, in accordance with the international tiebreaker rule, each team places a runner at second base to begin each frame. Nicole Shipp was placed on second to start the top of the eighth for LC, advanced to third on a Jessi Hall single and scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Melanie Tenney.

With a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the eighth, Johnson struck out the first two batters and the game ended on a flyout to leave a Maroon stranded at second base.

Hall had two hits for LC.

Lynchburg scored first in the nightcap, as Shipp singled home Kayla St. John in the second inning. St. John brought home Tenney with a single of her own in the third to give LC a 2-0 edge. Roanoke tied the game with two runs in the fourth, but Lynchburg answered with two more runs in the top of the fifth. Logan Walker singled to plate Skylar Seals and Shipp brought home Amber Ingram with a base-hit to push the lead to 4-2. Sarah Groft hit a solo home run for RC in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to one, but couldn't get closer.

Ingram earned the win for the Hornets, scattering six hits and three walks with eight strikeouts.  Shipp collected three hits and two RBI, while Tenney and St. John each had two hits.

Stephanie Clark was 2-2 for Roanoke (11-18/6-10 ODAC).

Lynchburg (23-11/11-5) travels to Sweet Briar College for another ODAC doubleheader Tuesday at 3 p.m.
