Hornet Softball Splits Non-Conference DH at Ferrum
FERRUM, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader Saturday at Ferrum College, dropping the first contest 6-2 but rallying to take game two 3-2. The loss breaks a Hornet nine-game win streak.
Ferrum got on the board early with a run in the bottom of the first in the opener, but LC tied the score at one all in the third after an RBI double from Jessi Hall. Amanda Roberts hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third to put the Panthers ahead 4-1. LC plated its second run in the top of the sixth as Hall singled, stole second and scored on a single from Danielle Powell.
Powell had two hits for Lynchburg. Karly Thompson went 3-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI for Ferrum.
In the nightcap, the Hornets pulled ahead 3-0 after a run in the second and two more in the third. Skylar Seals drove in the LC run in the second frame and Powell and Kayla St. John had run-producing singles in the third. Ferrum's Chloe Brzycki cut the lead to one with a two-run blast in the sixth, but Amber Ingram worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win.
Ingram scattered eight hits and two walks while striking out six en route to her 13th win of the season. Powell again had two hits for Lynchburg, and Thompson had two base hits for the Panthers (23-13).
The Hornets end the regular season with a 26-12 overall mark, and will enter the 2014 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament as the #2 seed. Match-ups and have yet to be determined, but LC will open play in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament Friday at 2 p.m. against the #7 seed.
