Hornet Softball Stays Alive with 8-5 Victory over EMU

SALEM, VA – Junior Amber Ingram again was the star as the second-seeded Lynchburg College softball team defeated Eastern Mennonite 8-5 Saturday in an elimination game in the 2014 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship Tournament.

EMU took a 1-0 lead in the first but LC bounced back with three runs in the top of the fourth. Melanie Tenney and Danielle Powell opened the inning with singles and each moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Kayla St. John. Ingram singled to drive in both runners and later scored herself on a base hit from Logan Walker. The Royals answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth on a double from Jordan Aylor.

Lynchburg took the lead for good in the fifth, as St. John singled to score Tenney. The Hornets pushed across four much-needed insurance runs in the seventh, the big blow coming again from Ingram on a two-run double. Jessi Hall later singled to put Lynchburg ahead 8-3. Eastern Mennonite scored two in the bottom of the seventh, but left two others stranded as the game ended with the tying run at the plate.

Ingram threw four innings to also earn the win, and Hope Johnson threw three innings of relief to pick up the save, allowing no earned runs. Ingram finished 2-3 at the plate with four RBI and a walk, and Powell and Hall each had two hits. Tenney reached base safely in three of her four plate appearances.

Brooke Hensley, Aislinn Lycas, Angela Miller and Casey Racer each had two hits for Eastern Mennonite, who ends the season with an 18-18-1 record.

Lynchburg (30-13) will face fourth-seeded Randolph-Macon College at 8:30 p.m. in another elimination game.
