Fresh Arms Take #26 Hornets to 20-Win Plateau

FERRUM, VA—The No. 26 Lynchburg College baseball team scored four runs in the ninth and threw six hitless innings of relief to win a non-conference game, 6-5, at Ferrum College on Tuesday night.

The Hornets struck first in the second inning on Joe Tomasulo's RBI single to left before letting the Panthers tie the game at one heading into the third.

Ferrum added three runs in the third and were threatening in the fourth against Hornet starter Michael Day when the Hornets turned to the bullpen.

Trevor Martin entered the game for Lynchburg and limited the damage, limiting Ferrum to a sacrifice fly that made the score 5-1.

It was Martin's first appearance of the 2014 season and he made the most of the opportunity. The sophomore threw 4 1/3 hitless innings against the dangerous Panther offense, striking out four while walking two.

While Martin kept it close from the mound, Ferrum starter Marquis Johnson combined with Ian Gordon and Taylor Davis to hold LC to two runs through eight frames.

That second run came on Lincoln Evans' sacrifice fly in the fifth inning after Jake Tanner singled and Drew Taylor reached on a two-base error.

Lynchburg turned to another pitcher making his 2014 debut when Charlie Thieringer took the mound with one out in the eighth inning. Thieringer induced a fly out before striking out Matt Reynolds to send the game to the ninth inning.

The Panthers turned to their closer, Manny Torres, in the final inning to preserve a 5-2 lead, but he walked Dustin Arrowood and Wil Parsons to bring the tying run to the plate in the person of Jay Kenyon. The starting catcher, Kenyon, singled back up the middle to center field, scoring Arrowood to cut the gap to two.

Joe Tomasulo grounded back to Torres in the next at bat, but a throwing error allowed Parsons to score from second and chased Kenyon all the way to third base. Tanner followed Tomasulo with a ground-ball out to second that tied up the game as Kenyon crossed the plate. Another error scored the winning run as Drew Taylor's grounder to third could not be corralled as Tomasulo touched home for the 6-5 Hornet lead.

Thieringer struck out Lane Deaver and Ty Comer to start the inning before Ferrum's pinch hitter, Hank Parsley, flew out to end the threat.

Thieringer (1-0) finished with three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings without allowing a hit. Parsons and Kenyon each had two hits for LC while Tomasulo drove in two.

Johnson allowed one run in four five-hit innings for Ferrum (18-13). Six Panthers collected a hit on the evening.

Lynchburg (20-5/8-4) travels to Guilford College (13-18/6-9) Thursday for a 3 p.m. start in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action.
