LC Softball Takes Game Two to Split Doubleheader with Bridgewater
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Wednesday with visiting Bridgewater College, dropping the first game 7-1 but rallying to capture the second contest 5-3.
The Eagles hit four home runs in the opener, including a solo home run in the first inning from Lauren Jenkins. LC answered with a run in the bottom of the first. Jessi Hall singled, stole second base and eventually scored on a single from Kayla St. John. Bridgewater broke the game open with four baggers from Berkeley Driskill, Brea Hinegardner and Amanda Lutz.
Hall finished 2-2 with a walk and three stolen bases. Hinegardner went 3-4 with three RBI for BC, and Brianna Cox earned the win in the circle, allowing just two hits and two walks.
L C opened the second game with a run in the second to take an early 1-0 lead. St. John led off the frame with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Amber Ingram. A Hornet error in the top of the fourth led to a BC run, but Lynchburg answered in the bottom of the inning. St. John singled and scored on a single by Lauren Smith. Smith provided three much-needed insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run blast over the left-field fence to push the lead to 5-1. A two-run home run from pinch hitter Haley Harris in the top of the seventh cut into the lead, but LC held on.
St. John was 3-3 with two runs scored and Smith had two hits and four RBI. Ingram worked all seven innings, striking out six with five hits and two walks. Lutz was 2-3 for Bridgewater (15-10-1/6-7-1).
Lynchburg (19-11/7-5 ODAC) hosts Guilford College Saturday at 1:30 p.m. for another ODAC twin bill. The programs' three seniors will be recognized in a ceremony before the first pitch.
