#10 Field Hockey Scores Four Unanswered for 6-3 Comeback Victory at Bridgewater
BRIDGEWATER, VA – Freshman Nicole Simpao scored twice and assisted once to lead the 10th-ranked Lynchburg College field hockey team to a 6-3 victory at Bridgewater College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Tuesday night.
Both squads played well offensively, and it was tight throughout the whole first 35 minutes. Lynchburg got on the board eight minutes in when Lacey Elliott crossed a ball from the right side over to Simpao, who finished off the counterattack.
Bridgewater's Alenka Ferrufino assisted leading goal-scorer Taylor Prillaman to even the score 1-1 at 19:58. The Eagles would score again a minute and a half later when Prillaman found Caroline Fletcher to seize the lead from the Hornets.
LC wouldn't let Bridgewater stay ahead for long, as Karissa LeMaire collected a rebound off the post and knocked it into the boards to make it 2-2 at the 23:02 mark. Three minutes later the Hornets would assume the lead for the second time when Elliott assisted once more, this time to freshman forward Mallory Henderson.
After leading 3-2 at the break, the hot-scoring Hornets continued their goal scoring rhythm into the second half as Kayla Copeman scored via a Simpao assist. Six minutes following that, Copeman gave an assist right back to Simpao to increase Lynchburg's lead to four.
The home squad took advantage of a green card against the Hornets in the 67th minute as Prillaman scored for a second time with a pass from teammate Allison Kirk, making the score 5-3.
LC scored one last time in the final second of play as sophomore Sydney Rampey received a ball from Elaine Ritschard, scoring her first goal as a Hornet.
Beka Hess finished the match with three saves in the cage for the Hornets.
Bridgewater (3-7, 1-1) was led by Prillaman, who was involved in each of the three Eagle goals (two goals, one assist). Net-minder Hannah Rioux made six saves coming from 12 shots on frame by the visitors.
The Hornets' six goals is a new season-high, and they currently lead the ODAC in goals scored with 31. Lynchburg (9-1) moves to 2-1 ODAC play. Next they travel to Sewanee, TN to take on Rhodes College Friday at noon.
