LC Softball Defeats Rhodes, Falls to Emory in One-Run Games
ATLANTA, GA – The Lynchburg College softball team defeated Rhodes College (TN) 1-0 Sunday but fell 5-4 to host Emory University to conclude play at the Emory University Tournament.
Freshman Conner English was dominant in the circle against Rhodes, working all seven innings and allowing just three hits and two walks with two strikeouts to earn her first collegiate victory.
Lynchburg scored the only run it would need in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Jessi Hall reach base on an error and advanced all the way to third, scoring later on a Danielle Powell single. Powell finished with two hits, as did Amber Sulter.
Forrest Skelton threw a complete game four hitter for the Lynx (1-7), allowing just the one unearned run.
Emory earned a thrilling victory in the nightcap. The Eagles broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but LC quickly answered with two runs in the top of the fifth on RBIs from Hall and Powell. Emory retook the lead with a single run in the bottom of the sixth, but LC went ahead 4-3 with two runs in the top of the seventh. Kayla St. John doubled home Nicole Riley to tie the score and later crossed the plate herself on an error. The Hornets were one out away from victory in the bottom of the seventh, but after two-straight Eagles reached base with two down, Ashley Powers doubled to right center to score both runners and end the contest.
Powers finished 3-4 with three doubles, two runs scored and three RBI for Emory (4-0).
The Hornets (2-2) are scheduled to travel to Methodist University for a non-conference doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
