Hornet Softball Opens Play at Salisbury with two wins
SALISBURY, MD – The Lynchburg College softball team opened the Salisbury University Tournament Friday with wins over Rutgers-Camden and Capital University Friday in non-conference play.
Senior Jessi Hall blasted a grand slam in the morning to lift LC to a 7-0 win against Rutgers-Camden in the first game of the tournament.
The Hornets put the game away in the bottom of the second with five runs. Amber Ingram opened the inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded and two outs, Hall lifted a long fly ball to right field that bounced off the top of the fence and went over.
Ingram doubled in the fourth inning, scoring Powell after an error, and another run scored on a wild pitch in the sixth.
Senior Elizabeth Fioretti threw four innings, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out six to earn the win. Kirsten Copley and Jamie Robertson combine to throw three hitless innings of relief.
Hall and Ingram each had two hits for LC. Taylor Nichols had two hits for the Scarlett Raptors (0-1).
Lynchburg defeated Capital 3-1 behind four strong innings from starter Hope Johnson. She allowed just four hits to earn the win, and Conner English threw three innings of perfect relief to pick up the save.
Hall opened the game with a single and a stolen base in the top of the first and scored on a Kayla St. John single. LC plated two more runs in the third, with Danielle Powell drilling an RBI double.
LeAnna Cotton had two hits for Capital (7-3).
The Hornets (9-3) are scheduled to face Rutgers-Camden Saturday at 10 a.m. and Ursinus College at noon in the SU Tournament.
