SALISBURY, MD – The Lynchburg College softball team won its first game of the day Saturday at the Salisbury University Tournament before the second was suspended due to rain.
Lynchburg scored a 9-1 win over Rutgers-Camden in the opener. The Hornets scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings to stake a 3-1 lead, and blew the game open with four in the fifth. Kirsten Copley ended the contest with a two-run pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the sixth.
Amber Sulter went 3-3 while Amber Ingram was 2-2 with a walk. Jessi Hall scored four runs and Logan Walker reached base three times. Conner English earned the win out of the bullpen, tossing 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts.
Rutgers-Camden falls to 1-2.
Lynchburg (10-3) fought back from a 2-0 deficit in the second game of the day against Ursinus, posting three runs in the second inning to take the lead. Walker singled home Ingram before Sulter drove in a pair on a single up the middle for a 3-2 LC edge.
Ursinus tied the game up in the bottom of the second before Lynchburg took the lead for good in the fourth inning as Kayla St. John doubled home a pair in front of a Danielle Powell RBI single to put Lynchburg ahead 6-3.
Hope Johnson pitched 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen to hold Ursinus at bay and allow the Hornets to capitalize at the plate.
Sulter ended the day 4-6 at the plate while Hall scored five runs for LC.
Play was halted in the bottom of the fifth inning, three outs shy of being an official game, with Lynchburg leading 6-5. The rain only picked up from there, making it impossible to restart the game.
