Hot Start Heats up Marlins as Hornets Hold on for 13-11 win

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College women's lacrosse team scored seven-straight goals to open up the game on the way to a 13-11 victory over Virginia Wesleyan College.  The Wednesday evening win was the first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory for LC on the year.

The Hornets dominated the opening 20 minutes of the game.  Katherine Francis took possession of the opening draw control, and Katie Seidel scored her first of the game after only 20 seconds had gone by.  LC kept up the pressure, forcing Madison Carroll into stopping three shots.  The Hornets retained possession, and Caroline Carozza found the back of the net at 25:20 to put LC up 2-0.

Lynchburg earned the next opportunity, which was saved as well.  It was at that point that the Hornet defense and goalie Hailey Bossert rose to the occasion.  LC foiled two free position attempts, stopped two shots, and caused two turnovers, which enveloped a Ryland Scott goal that put the score at 3-0. 

Francis notched her first of the game soon after at the 19:55 mark.  The Hornets threw in a quick barrage afterwards, with goals from Alexa Carey, Francis (on the man advantage), and Lindsay Parker, put the LC up 7-0 with just over 12 minutes remaining.

Candace Carey helped the Marlins stage a comeback before the half, as she scored three in-a-row.  Two were free position goals, and one coming after a Hornet penalty, and the two teams would enter the intermission at 7-3.

VWC got on the board first after the break, as Carla Williams scored at 27:19.  Francis fed Carey at 26:35 to retake the four-goal lead, and then Francis added to it 14 seconds later, scoring on a free position attempt.  Virginia Wesleyan responded to cut the lead back to four. 

The teams went back and forth during the next several minutes.  Carozza added two more goals, while Carey finished off her own hat trick during that time.  Sarah Suter also added a goal, her first-career to start the action.  However, the Marlins continued to score, keeping the action close.  Carozza's third put the Hornets up five with 8:23 remaining.

VWC then went on a run, scoring three times by the 4:11 mark to cut the lead to 13-11.  But Bossert once again stepped up, making three saves in the final minutes to preserve the victory.

Carroll made 13 saves for the Marlins (4-3 overall, 1-1 ODAC).  Megan Shallock also added a hat trick for Virginia Wesleyan, along with a game-high six draw controls.  Bossert made 15 saves, and the stout defense caused 10 turnovers in the win.

Lynchburg (3-3, 1-1) takes on five-time defending ODAC Champion Washington & Lee University (5-1, 2-2) on Saturday.  The Hornets host the Generals on Shellenberger Field at 7 p.m.
