David Shuts Down Hornet Bats in 6-3 Tufts Victory

LYNCHBURG, VA – Junior Andrew David pitched eight innings as the Tufts University baseball team stopped Lynchburg College 6-3 in a non-conference contest Thursday afternoon.

The LC loss is the first to Tufts since the 2012 season, when the Hornets went on to win their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) title since the 1990 campaign.

Tufts jumped on the board first Friday with a lone run in the first and second innings. Bryan Egan provided an RBI single in the first before Tom Petry added a second score on an RBI groundout in the second off LC starter Sawyer Thieringer (0-1).

The Jumbos tacked on four insurance runs in the fourth through sixth innings as Egan, Matt Moser, and Harry Brown produced RBIs in the surge.

Lynchburg trailed 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Joe Rogers doubled with one out, scoring on a Jonathan Munn single that bounced down the right field line.

The Hornets cut the gap back to two runs in the fifth after giving up a two-spot to Tufts in the top half of the frame. Ryan Katona singled in front of a Wil Parsons double to set the table for the top of the order with no outs. Lincoln Evans singled past a diving third baseman to score Katona before Rogers reached on an RBI fielder's choice for the second out. David induced a groundout to end the threat with the Jumbos leading 5-3. The two-run difference was the closest LC would get the rest of the way.

David (2-0) allowed three runs on seven hits in eight innings of work. He had good control of the strike zone, striking out 10 Hornets without issuing a walk. Cody McCallum went 3-for-4 for Tufts (5-3).

The Lynchburg bullpen of Zack Engelmann, Logan Woodall, Colton Steber, and Nick Trio did not allow an earned run in 4 2/3 innings of action. Rogers had two hits and a stolen base while Parsons added two base knocks.

Lynchburg (5-10/2-1 ODAC) hosts Virginia Wesleyan College (5-4/5-1) in an ODAC doubleheader Saturday at noon.
