Hornets Bring Out Big Bats to Defeat Southern Virginia 14-1

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team had six extra base hits Thursday afternoon to defeat Southern Virginia University 14-1 in non-conference action.

The Hornets ran away with the contest early, posting five runs in the first frame. Drew Taylor led off the contest with a single before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. A Joe Rogers single moved him to third where he scored on a wild pitch. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Jonathan Munn and Luke Rodgers made it 3-0 before Joe Tomasulo reached on an error. Lincoln Evans and Austin Owens extended the inning due to the error, picking up RBIs on a ground out and single respectively.

Gerald Taylor (2-0) pitched the best game of his career for Lynchburg, throwing a personal-best seven innings, four of which were three up, three down. He allowed one earned run on just five hits while striking out two and not issuing a walk.

The freshman duo of Rodgers and Owens helped the Hornets pull away late. Making their third straight starts, the twosome provided big blasts throughout the game.

Rodgers led all Hornets with four hits, going 4-for-6 with two runs scored and three RBI. He had two doubles for LC and came through in the clutch, scoring each runner on base during his turns at the plate.

Owens was just as impressive, driving in a team-high four RBI on the afternoon. His biggest blast came in the sixth when he tomahawked a deep blast over the left-field wall off Jordan Cooper to score Evans and make the score 11-1.

Six different players had one hit each for Southern Virginia (3-10) while Kaleb Caplin worked 2/3 of an inning of scoreless relief in the bottom of the eighth.

Lynchburg (7-13/3-3 ODAC) hosts Guilford College (6-16/2-9) Tuesday at 3 p.m. for a rematch of last week's LC Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory.
