Huge First Half and Career Day for Carozza give Hornets Key Win over Quakers
GREENSBORO, NC – The Lynchburg College women's lacrosse team scored 11 goals in the first half and Caroline Carozza tallied 10 points in the Hornets 20-7 victory over Guilford College. The Hornets' total from the first stanza topped the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival's total tally on Thursday evening, which was the first victory for LC in the series since the 2011 season.
Lynchburg was the first team to get on the scoreboard as Alexa Carey changed the scoreboard on a free position shot four minutes in. GC responded using a long possession to tie the game at one at 23:36. It took a few minutes but the first barrage by the Hornets began at 18:30. Katie Seidel started the run with her first of the night. LC possessed the draw control, and Carozza hit Carey for her second of the night at 18:11. Carozza scored less than a minute later, and assisted on the final tally of the run, as Katherine Francis made it 5-1.
Demming Carlow put the Quaker within three at the 10 minute mark, but the Hornets responded with another run. Carozza once again assisted on a Francis goal to put the lead back at four. There was a lull in the scoring, but LC erupted in the last five minutes. Ryland Scott fired a free position shot in the back of the net after she was fouled on her previous shot. Carozza powered through for her second of the evening at the 2:46 mark to put the score at 8-2. Marina Bailey put the score at 8-3 with 1:36 left, however Lynchburg added three more in the final minute to go up 11-3. Sarah Suter, Seidel, and Carozza all tallied in the waning moments.
Carozza opened up the action in the second the way she ended the first, scoring her fourth of the game. Eleanora Keene earned a free position shot on the following position and converted to stop the run seconds later. Suter and Francis came back quickly to give Lynchburg a 10-goal advantage. Keene added another at 23:00, but it was followed by the final blitz.
Maddie Koontz scored a hat trick in the six-goal onslaught, as Carey finished her hat trick off, and Carozza added two to her total. Guilford scored two late consolation goals, but it would be for naught.
Carozza's 10 points (six goals, four assists) tied for the sixth most in a game by a Hornet in the history of the program. The senior class defeated the Quakers for the first time in their careers. Scott picked up five draw controls and caused one turnover and fellow senior Hailey Bossert stopped 13 shots in the win.
Keene led Guilford (4-4 overall, 1-2 ODAC) with three goals, four draw controls, and two caused turnovers.
Lynchburg (4-4,2-2) continues on the road this weekend. The Hornets will make the trip up to Bridgewater College (5-3, 2-0) on Saturday with the game set to begin at 7 p.m.
