Softball Splits ODAC DH against Roanoke
SALEM, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader at Roanoke College Saturday night. Roanoke won the first game 3-1 before Lynchburg won the following matchup 11-9 in nine innings.
The Hornets' lone run in the first game came in the fourth inning when Jessica Murphy came in to pinch run after Amber Ingram walked. Shortly after that, Amber Sulter singled for an RBI sending Murphy in to score and even the game at 1-1. Roanoke's nine total hits led the way for the Maroons to score their three runs that came in the third and fourth innings.
The second contest remained scoreless through the fourth inning until Skylar Seals singled down the left-field line to send in Lauren Smith for an RBI. The Maroons scored three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to take a five run lead, but Lynchburg found their stride scoring five runs in the top of the seventh to nod the game at six runs apiece. Hits came from Kayla St. John, Danielle Powell, and Seals.
As the Hornet defense held the Maroons scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, extra innings were forced. Lynchburg then took the lead after a two-run homer over the centerfield wall from Leslie Bourgeois. Roanoke answered with a pair of runs of their own to send the game into the ninth.
In the top of the ninth, Ingram was able to run home on a wild throw by the pitcher to first base. A score from Smith off another RBI from Seals and a home run from pitcher Hope Johnson over left center gave the Maroons too much to handle, as LC ended the game winning 11-9. Leading the way for Lynchburg was Seals who had three hits and four runs batted in.
Roanoke (8-10, 3-3) was lead by Katie Smith (one run, three hits, two RBIs) and Taylor Carter (two runs, one hit, one RBI).
Lynchburg (18-9, 6-2) will be back in action again next Tuesday in a twin bill at Sweet Briar College.
