No. 37 Generals Upend Hornets in Season Opener
LEXINGTON, VA-The Lynchburg College men's tennis team faltered in the season and Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener against No. 37 Washington and Lee University, 5-0, on Wednesday evening.
The Generals, defending ODAC champion and preseason favorite proved to be a tough early season challenge for the Hornets.
Andrew Link and Josh Johnson both completed singles matches in a team match played to decision. Grady Allin, Jordan Falinski, Peter Conlon and Kelvin Whitehurst were still on the courts when the match was decided. Washington and Lee (3-1/3-0 ODAC) swept the doubles points.
Allin made an impression in the unfinished singles match due to his powerful serve while Johnson held his own at the top of the ladder against one of the best singles players in the region.
"Starting off the season against some of the nation's most successful programs allowed our team to see what we need to do to get where we want to be," head coach Josef Manilla explained. "I was very proud of our team's character tonight. The culture we have created will prove to be a strong foundation for a successful future."
Lynchburg (0-1/0-1) will look to continue improving when it returns to the courts for a home match Saturday against Covenant College. The 4 p.m. match will take place at E.C. Glass High School, as will the remainder of the home slate.
