St. John, Ingram Fireworks Carry Hornets to Senior Day Sweep
LYNCHBURG, VA – Senior Amber Ingram provided the heroics on Senior Day as the Lynchburg College softball team walked off in game one 6-5 before jumping ahead early for a 5-1 victory over Randolph-Macon College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Saturday afternoon.
Seniors Jessi Hall, Hope Johnson, Amber Sulter, Elizabeth Fioretti, Amber Ingram, Olivia Donohue and Skylar Seals were recognized for their career accomplishments between games.
Randolph-Macon turned to the long ball early against the Hornets. Harley Jones started the scoring in the top of the second inning when she smacked a long bomb over the left field bullpen for a 1-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets extended it to 2-0 in the third before LC cut the gap back to one in the bottom half of the frame. Danielle Powell lined a ball out to right that could not be corralled by a diving Jones which allowed Jessica Murphy to score from third.
Randolph-Macon opened the lead again in the fourth when Melissa Rundstrom sent a deep drive over the wall in left-center, scoring both runners on base for the 5-1 margin.
Trailing 5-2 and down to their last two outs, the Hornets capitalized as Nicole Riley and Hall singled. Kayla St. John got a 1-1 fastball up in the zone from Nelda Bagley and drove it over the center-field fence to tie up the contest.
One batter later, Ingram crushed a 2-2 pitch to the opposite field, slamming a line drive off the scoreboard to walk off a victor.
Lynchburg used the momentum from the game one fireworks to pull away early in game two. Hall led off the contest with a single down the right-field line, scoring on St. John's second home run of the day.
The Hornets added a third run with Ingram on third and Powell on third. The catcher, having picked off a couple runners in the first game, threw in behind Powell at third but the return throw home went wide, allowing the third tally to score. Ingram extended the gap to 5-0 with a two-run blast in the fifth inning.
Lynchburg posted seven hits in the first two innings to back starter Conner English who carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. The freshman finished the afternoon with six strikeouts, allowing one run (unearned) on three hits. The complete game was her team-leading sixth of the season.
Lynchburg (28-11/16-4) is off until the post season which will see the Hornets, at worst, tie for the No. 2 seed when play starts Friday.
