Seniors Lead Hornets to Victory in Final Game of the Season

LYNCHBURG, VA – Seniors filled the starting lineup on Senior Day as the Lynchburg College baseball team defeated 10-4 in the regular season finale for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) schools Sunday morning.

The win moved Lynchburg into a tie with Eastern Mennonite University for the sixth spot but, because the two teams split in the regular season, a five-point tiebreaker was used to determine the final outcome. The points remained close as LC and EMU defeated top squads, had similar records against the top four seeds, and swept the same opponents. The deciding factor was the season series with Roanoke College; EMU won 2-0 while LC lost both.

Lynchburg led 3-2 heading into the sixth inning when the seniors showed why they have been so successful over the course of the last four seasons, posting seven runs to go up 10-2 on the Generals.

Joseph Knight led off the frame with a hit by pitch and was sacrificed to second by Josh Perry. That is when the hit parade began as LC collected five straight base knocks, singles from Ryan Katona, Wil Parsons, Joe Rogers and Pat Harris, and a double from Lincoln Evans. RBIs in the barrage came from Evans, Harris and Parsons who had two. Rob Tomasulo and Knight added doubles later in the frame to plate the remaining three runs LC would score in the inning.

Evans, Parsons, Rogers, Harris, Tomasulo and Katona all had two hits while Parsons and Tomasulo drove in three. Parsons also scored twice and cranked his second homer of the season in the bottom of the first.

Senior Reid Goss (1-0) picked up his first career win with two innings of relief. Harris, a fellow senior, got the start, striking out six and allowing just three hits in four innings.

Tyler Murphy threw 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for Washington and Lee (8-16/6-14 ODAC) while Jonny Swenson went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored twice.

Jay Kenyon, Brandon Miller, Martin Henderlite, Charlie Thieringer, Knight, Evans, Tomasulo, Parsons, Perry, Harris, Rogers and Goss were all recognized in a post-game ceremony for their contributions to the program.

Lynchburg (15-20/10-10) concludes the season after winning seven of the final 10 games down the stretch.
