Randolph-Macon Scores 6-2 win over LC in ODAC Tourney
SALEM, VA – A late offensive barrage gave fourth-seeded Randolph-Macon College a 6-2 win over #2 Lynchburg College in the winner's bracket of the 2015 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship Tournament.
Hornet freshman Conner English was locked in a pitcher's duel in the early going with Nelda Bagley, the Yellow Jacket left-hander. The Hornet hurler recorded a win and a save in LC's two wins on Friday, while Bagley tossed complete-game shutouts in each of her appearances.
LC scratched out a run in the bottom of third inning. Amber Sulter drew a walk with one out and Jessica Murphy was brought on as a pinch runner. After an out, Jessi Hall singled to move Murphy to second, and Kayla St. John singled up the middle to drive home her fourth run of the tournament.
Randolph-Macon broke through for two runs in the top of the fifth inning, as Sierra Ford brought home two runners with a double to left center.
Lynchburg nearly tied the score in the sixth. St. John singled and Skylar Dickens pinch ran for the sophomore. Danielle Powell drilled a double to right center with two outs, but the runner was thrown out at home on the relay throw to end the inning.
Randolph-Macon broke the contest open in the top of the seventh, leading off with three-straight singles to load the bases. A ground out scored a run, and Harley Jones belted a three-run home run with two outs to push the lead to 6-1.
Leslie Bourgeois, Logan Walker and Skylar Seals singled to open the bottom of the seventh with no outs, but LC could only plate one run.
Bagley went the distance again, scattering seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Skylar Toth, Jones and Hayden Fontenot each had three hits for the Yellow Jackets (25-10).
The Hornets (30-12) are scheduled to play later this afternoon against the winner of the Roanoke College/Emory & Henry College contest in an elimination game. Randolph-Macon advances to Sunday play and will face the surviving team in the finals, needing just one win to claim the ODAC title.
Top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan College was knocked out of the tournament by the Wasps on Saturday.
