Hornet Women's Lacrosse Drops 7-6 ODAC Heartbreaker at #10 W&L in ODAC Semifinals

LEXINGTON, VA – The Lynchburg College women's lacrosse team nearly pulled off another upset in the semifinals of the 2015 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament, but top-seeded Washington & Lee University rallied for a 7-6 overtime win. The fifth-seeded Hornets rolled to a 10-5 win Saturday at #4 Roanoke College in the tournament quarterfinals.

Sophomore Alexa Carey got LC on the scoreboard just a minute into the contest. The Generals scored the game's next three goals and assumed a 3-1 advantage late in the first half. Carey fed Ryland Scott for a tally with four minutes left but W&L scored to take a 4-2 lead into halftime. All six first half-goals were scored by different players.

Lynchburg started the second-half strong, netting the first three scores of the period. Katie Seidel, Dorrie MacGregor and Lindsay Parker each found the back of the net to put LC ahead 5-4 with 17 minutes remaining.

Lee Sammy Yates evened the score for W&L with 11:39 on the game clock. LC's Caroline Carozza gave the Hornets a 6-5 edge with 8:48 left and keeper Hailey Bossert made two tough saves on free position attempts over the next six minutes to keep the lead. Lauren Procaccino scored her second goal of the game for the Generals with 1:22 left and neither team could break the tie before the extra session.

Yates scored from Melissa Coggins in the overtime period and Washington & Lee was able to hold onto the ball for the final 3:46 and deny LC a chance to tie the game.

Bossert made 11 saves between the pipes, keeping Lynchburg (9-8) in the game despite getting outshot 26-15. Helen Boniface scooped a game-high four groundballs for the Hornets and Marissa Dadura caused two turnovers. Carozza finished the game with a goal and two assists and MacGregor and Grace Finnerty each won three draw controls.

Washington & Lee (14-2), ranked #10 in NCAA Division III, moves on to the ODAC Finals Saturday to host the winner of tonight's Randolph-Macon College/Virginia Wesleyan College match.
