Hornets Drop first, Fall in Shortened Game Two

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team fell in game one of a doubleheader 5-3 against Guilford College on Wednesday afternoon.  LC dropped game two of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) twin-bill, 3-2, in a game that only went five innings due to the interference of Mother Nature.

Game one saw LC control the early stages of the game.  Jessi Hall led off in the bottom of the first as usual and reached on a base on balls.  She stole second to get into scoring position and would score soon after.  Kayla St. John attempted a sacrifice bunt, which was even more successful as the Guilford second baseman committed an error, allowing Hall to score and St. John to get to second.  After a groundout advanced St. John to third, she then scored on a Lauren Smith single up the middle.

The bottom of the third provided the same start as the first, as Hall got on base, this time with a single.  She once again stole second, and was pushed to third on a groundout by St. John.  Danielle Powell knocked in Hall for the 3-0 lead after three.

The Quakers took control of the game in the later stages.  Casey Snead homered to lead off the fifth inning to cut the lead to two, and the advantage fell to one in the sixth as two errors led to Marty Wilcox crossing the plate.

GC finished off the comeback in the seventh, scoring three runs, with two of the three runs unearned.  Lynchburg had one on in the bottom of the inning but that would be it.

Maggie Shaffer recorded the win for the Quakers (21-9 overall, 9-3 ODAC) in game one.

Game two saw a quick start as well for the Hornets.  With two outs in the first, Powell crushed one to center field to get LC on the board.

Guilford responded in the third.  LC got the first two batters out, before the Quakers started a rally.  Laura Hall singled and stole second.  She then scored after a wild pitch.

GC added two more in the fourth to go up 3-1.  Powell added another bomb to center in the fifth inning, to bring the Hornets within a run at 3-2.

However, the game was called during the sixth inning of action due to darkness.  A long delay occured due to rain and lightning during the second inning.  Play resumed until the sixth inning when the umpires deemed it was too dark to continue play.  The sixth inning was not completed and therefore does not count, but the game is official because of five completed innings, with the winning run coming in those five innings.

The Hornets (22-11, 10-4) head on the road this weekend.  LC travels to ODAC rival Bridgewater College (9-17, 2-10) for a twin-bill with the first game starting at 1 p.m.
