Kayla Copeman Scores Twice as Lynchburg FH Holds On to Win 2-1
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College field hockey team won its home opener against Stevenson University on Saturday with a 2-1 final score behind two goals from freshman Kayla Copeman.
At the four minute mark defender Kayla Krause hit a long ball up the field into space allowing Copeman to run on to it. Copeman broke down the right side getting past a defender and scored between the legs of Mustang's goalkeeper to score the first goal of the game.
The 1-0 score would hold until halftime and a third of the way into the second half when Copeman found the net once again. This time it was a deflection in front of the cage as Nicole Simpao played the ball in from the left side for the assist.
Stevenson scored late as Holly Eppley struck a rebound to the boards, bringing her Mustangs within a goal with only three minutes remaining. Coach Laurel Martin called a timeout following the goal to regroup her team, but LC played aggressive to finish off the game despite a last-second corner opportunity for Stevenson to hold on for the win.
In a game where the Mustangs seemed to hold possession for the majority, Stevenson had many opportunities offensively that were put to rest by the swarming Hornet defensive line made up by Kayla Krause, Ashley Heuberger, and Hannah Krause. Beka Hess played like a wall in the goal, stopping 11 total shots, including seven in the second half. Additionally, Heuberger was credited with a defensive save. The Mustangs (0-2) led the Hornets in shots as well as corners, 20-4 and 9-3 respectively.
Lynchburg (2-0) is back in action again next Wednesday night as Christopher Newport University (1-0) travels to Shellenberger Field for a 6 p.m. start.
