Box Score Lynchburg, Va. – The Lynchburg Field Hockey team had to battle the Hornets of Shenandoah from start to finish to earn a 3-2 victory Wednesday night on Shellenberger Field. Lynchburg remains in first place in the ODAC and extends its winning streak to two games with the victory.
Lacey Elliott scored the game's first goal during the 11th minute, giving Lynchburg an early 1-0 advantage. The Hornets continued to fire shots on Shenandoah goalkeeper Jessica Brown before they slipped another goal past her in the 23rd minute, this time coming from sophomore Isabella Eldridge. Shenandoah would answer when Taylor Hayes scored on a penalty shot during the 30th minute. Lynchburg would take a 2-1 lead into half after out shooting Shenandoah 11-5.
The teams locked down on defense until the latter parts of the second half but sophomore Nikki Simpao scored her team leading 12th goal in the 52nd minute to extend the lead back to two goals for Lynchburg. Shenandoah took a timeout right after the goal and then answered quickly, scoring just three minutes later to narrow the lead to one goal. Lynchburg goalie Beka Hess and the defense held off a late Shenandoah attack to give Lynchburg a 3-2 victory. Hess made four saves in the Lynchburg victory and Lynchburg held an advantage in shots 18-8 and penalty corners 9-5. It was one of the more physical games for both teams as there were a total of seven cards handed out.
Lynchburg improves to (8-7, 5-0 ODAC) while Shenandoah drops to (8-7, 3-2 ODAC). The Hornets will travel to Randolph-Macon (2-12, 0-5 ODAC) this Friday for a match that is slated for a 7 p.m. start. The Yellow Jackets played tonight and defeated non-conference opponent Ferrum, 4-2.
