Box Score Greensboro, N.C. -- With a sound victory over Guilford on Monday night, the Men's Soccer team now sits atop the ODAC standings and control their own destiny.
Lynchburg needed a win to move back into first-place and they worked together and in a cohesive team effort earned the result they were looking for.
After being absent from the starting lineup early in the campaign, junior Nate Berning has made an immediate impact upon his return. He had a goal against Shenandoah last Friday and registered another score Monday night after firing home a beautiful cross from senior Ben Grossfuss in the 12th minute.
The Hornets continued to press the Quaker backline, holding a 6-2 advantage in shots following the early goal but Guilford almost tied it up with a header in the 25th minute but a team save kept the Lynchburg in the lead. The score would stay the same as the whistle sounded for halftime.
The teams traded shots in the second half but the attempts never threatened either goalkeeper. As the half began to dwindle, so did the Quakers chances but in the final three minutes a string of Lynchburg fouls gave Guilford opportunities to send the ball into the box.
The hope of equalizing the score was ultimately drained after the final foul and free kick turned into a breakaway for sophomore Zach Thomas. The forward easily finished off the goal as the Quaker goalie had run up to join the offensive push. The goal is the fourth on the season for Thomas and puts his points total for the past four games at seven.
With a three-save night, sophomore Dylan McLaurin secured another victory, improving to 12-1-3 on the season and lowering his conference leading Goals Against Average to 0.51.
Thomas led the Hornets with six shots while sophomore Austin Kues, freshman Jack Ashby and Grossfuss contributed with two shots each.
The Hornets will honor their Seniors this Wednesday, Oct. 26th before the game against Emory & Henry, which starts at 5:00 p.m.
