Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- The Lynchburg Field Hockey needed a win Wednesday night or Saturday to secure the top seed in the ODAC Tournament and saw no need to wait, defeating Roanoke, 1-0.
The temperatures dipped into the 40s as the whistle blew to start the game. After just five minutes of play, sophomore Nikki Simpao warmed the hearts of the Lynchburg faithful after beautifully faking out the keeper flicking a shot into the right side netting of the cage for her 17th goal of the season.
Lynchburg struck for a second score in the 13th minute. Freshman Keely Lunsmann inserted the ball from just outside the top of the arc and after ricocheting off the left post, sophomore Kayla Copeman pushed the ball across the line to extend her team's lead to two.
Roanoke would control the rest of the half, outshooting Lynchburg 5-2 but they could not capitalize on any of the attempts and the score would remain at 2-0 going into halftime.
After junior Karissa LeMaire fired the ball in front of the cage, Copeman unleashed a shot and registered her second goal of the night and 13th for her career.
The Hornet defense stood strong and withstood a heavy push by the Roanoke offense that lasted the remainder of the game. Junior Hannah Krause had one-on-one stops that neutralized multiple Maroon attacks.
Copeman and Simpao led the Hornets with five and three shots, respectively while sophomore Isabella Eldridge uncorked two shots of her own.
The Field Hockey team heads to Harrisonburg, Va. to close out the regular season as they visit Eastern Mennonite for a 1:00 p.m. conference tilt.
