Box Score Roanoke, Va. -- With two great defenses on display Saturday night, it was not a surprise that the match between Lynchburg and Roanoke ended in a tie, 1-1.
Even though the Hornets could not leave Roanoke with a victory, they still secured the top seed in the ODAC Tournament thanks to the Maroons fighting Washington & Lee to a draw earlier in the week.
The first half contained a majority of the action, with both goals coming before halftime. There was only two shots in the first 20 minutes but the second provided the Hornets with their first goal after senior Thomas Salamone stepped back and sent in a sweeping corner kick that junior Fredy Flores headed into the left side of the net. The goal was Salamone's fifth assist on the year and Flores' sixth goal for the 2016 campaign.
The remainder of the half was all Maroons, firing off five shots to the Hornets one. Roanoke capitalized on a failed Lynchburg clearance and equalized the score in the 41st minute and the score would remain the same going into halftime.
The second half and overtime periods held promising attempts for both sides but neither team could net the go ahead goal. Lynchburg held a majority of the possession and benefited off of an aggressive Roanoke team who was issued four yellow cards and whistled for 31 fouls.
Lynchburg was led by a trio of Hornets in seniors Ben Grossfuss and Thomas Salamone as well as freshman Jack Ashby who each had two shots a piece. Sophomore Dylan McLaurin, who leads the ODAC in Goals Against Average (0.52) and save percentage (.847), oved to 13-1-4 overall and 7-0-2 in the conference.
With result the Hornets will host the winner of the play-in game between the #8 and #9 seeds on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at a time to be announced in the next few days. Stay tuned to lynchburgsports.com for updated news and info about all of the ODAC Tournament news and info.
