Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- Honoring nine seniors in their final regular season home game, the Hornets gave them a proper send off with a 6-0 romping of Eastern Mennonite on Saturday afternoon.
With a great atmosphere set, the Hornets and Royals kicked off a little after 1 p.m. for the final game of their respective seasons. The Hornets immediately tested the Royals' back line as senior Camille Bartley got her head to a service but was denied by the EMU keeper.
The next opportunity was lethal as sophomore Caitlin Mertens sent in a low ball and senior Samantha Bagherpour blasted a shot into the roof of the net to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. Lynchburg was able to put multiple shots on frame in the next 20 minutes but the EMU defense and goalkeeper made big plays to keep the ball out of the net.
Freshman Madalyn Amos found herself making multiple runs down the right side, sending in quality services in the first half but one proved to be more threatening than the others. She had beaten a defender was able to send the ball into the box but her momentum, which was carrying her out of bounds, also caused the ball to drift towards the net. The shot/cross fooled the goalkeeper and everyone in the crowd as the ball was well out of reach and landed in the side netting. The goal was Amos' third goal of the season and gave the Hornets a two goal lead going into halftime.
Young Hornets players came off the bench and showed promise for the future of Lynchburg Women's Soccer as they came into the game and provided four more goals in the second half.
Sophomore Sarah Hammock found herself alone down the right side and dribbled into the box and sent a driving ball that Mertens fired past the keeper to add another goal to her season total which now sits at 10, best on the team. Senior Kelley Smith would register two assists in a matter of seconds. Her first came from sending in a corner that junior Emily Maxwell pounded into the back of the net with her head and followed that up by beating a defender to get just outside the 8-yd box. Smith saw freshman Taylor Stevens making a run twoards goal and sent her a pass with which she sent a firecracker past the goalie. The Hornets scoring was rounded out by freshman Alyssa Kopsidas finding fellow freshman Madalyn Amos with a perfect ball.
The Hornets fired off 44 shots and were led by junior Rachel Cooke who had seven shots while senior Elizabeth Oden and Maxwell uncorked four and four different ladies recorded three each.
With the victory, the team guaranteed their seniors another home game as they now sit in third-place in the ODAC and will host the #6 seed on Wednesday in the ODAC Tournament. Stay tuned to lynchburgsports.com for updated seedings and info about quarterfinal matches next week.
