Box Score Ashland, Va. -- Lynchburg and Randolph-Macon braved Hurricane Matthew and after surviving gusty winds and sideways rain the Hornets prevailed, 2-1, erasing an early deficit with two unanswered goals.
The Yellow Jackets pressed forward early and were chasing the ball as it bounced between Hornet players. The tenacity paid off as they stole the ball in the Hornets half and a touch and go combination set up the goal that put the Hornets down one just four minutes into the game.
Visible even on the streaming video, heavy winds played a big factor as the Hornets had trouble sending ball long in the air in the first half, which is a big part of their game.
After a good sequence of ground passes, senior Thomas Salamone found himself making a run down the right side. The veteran defender whipped in a cross with which junior defender Nate Berning headed past the Randolph-Macon keeper to even the score 1-1 just a few minutes left in the first half. The score was the first for Berning in the 2016 campaign.
In the 60th minute, Salamone serviced a corner into the box that junior Fredy Flores got his head to and because of the wet conditions, the Macon goalkeeper mishandled the ball and the shot crossed the line for Flores' fourth goal on the year.
The two sides got chippy in the second half and the referees made numerous stoppages to hand out warnings and as the game progressed, cards were shown. Seven yellow cards, five for Macon and two for Lynchburg, were issued and one Yellow Jacket player earned a red card after accumulating two yellows and was sent off in the 89th minute.
The Hornets held the advantage in shots, 16-7, and were led by Flores who rifled four shots while a group of four Hornets pitched in two each as well. Sophomore goalkeeper Dylan McLaurin recorded two saves in the victory and upped his record to 9-0-2.
Lynchburg returns to action this Wednesday, Oct. 12th for a meeting with the ODAC leader's, Washington & Lee. Kickoff time is set for 3:00 p.m. in Lexington, Va.
