Mary Washington Defeats LC Women's Lax 11-5
LYNCHBURG, VA – The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team used a strong second half to defeat Lynchburg College 11-5 in the Hornets home opener Wednesday evening.
The Eagles took a 4-1 lead after the first 20 minutes of play, but the Hornets netted back-to-back goals to trail by just one, 4-3, at intermission. Alexa Carey, Sarah Fortune and Sidney Gleason each had Hornet goals in the first half.
Mary Washington scored to open the second half, but Lynchburg answered as Sarah Suter found the back of the net from Caroline Carozza. The Eagles rattled off the game's next five goals, two from Sabrina Elliott, to put the contest out of reach. Kat Francis had a late goal for LC and Carozza ended the day with two assists.
Marissa Dadura paced LC statistically on defense with five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Elliot and Holly Hudson each had hat tricks for Mary Washington (3-0). UMW had a 24-14 edge in shots and Kelsey Welsh made seven saves. Emily Mott caused five turnovers and Sarah Hampton scooped five groundballs and caused three turnovers.
The Hornets (0-1) will host Marymount University Saturday at 2 p.m. in more non-conference action.
