LC Softball Falls to #12 CNU in non-conference doubleheader
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team led 6-1 in the first game Saturday, but 12th-ranked Christopher Newport University came back to win 7-6 in eight innings and also took the second contest 11-0 in five frames.
CNU got on the scoreboard first in the opener of the non-conference doubleheader with a run in the top of the third inning. Lynchburg plated six runners in the bottom of the third to go ahead 6-1. After two outs were recorded, LC loaded the bases and Danielle Powell forced the first run across with a walk. Mackenzie Chitwood singled to send two runners home, and Brittany Coffey, Leslie Bourgeois and Lauren Smith followed with RBI singles.
The Captains scored four runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-5, and tied the game in the top of the seventh. LC threw a runner out at home with one out to preserve the tie. CNU pushed the winning run across in the top of the eighth on an error.
Coffey had two hits for LC and Skylar Dickens walked twice. Brittney Walters went 3-4 for CNU and Hannah Cook hit a two-run home run.
CNU jumped out early in the nightcap with eight runs in the first two innings and scored three in the fifth. Coffey again had two hits for the Hornets and Kayla St. John doubled. Tara Heatwole threw a complete game shutout for CNU (4-0).
Lynchburg (2-2) travels to Averett University Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader at 1:30 p.m.
