LC Softball Earns DH Split with New Paltz St.
SALISBURY, MD – The Lynchburg College softball team completed day one of the Salisbury University Tournament Friday with a doubleheader split against New Paltz State (NY), taking game one 10-0 and dropping the second 7-2.
The Hornets got all the run support they would need in the first inning, as Nicole Riley hit a single to left and came around to score on a two-out base hit from Mackenzie Chitwood. Following a walk to Logan Walker, Chitwood scored the game's second run on an infield error, giving the Hornets an early 2-0 advantage.
Lynchburg added two more runs in the second inning when Skylar Dickens led off the frame with a single to center and later scored from second on an error by the first baseman. Danielle Powell powered a homerun to left to extend the Hornet lead to four at the end of two. LC put the game out of reach with a four-run third inning, in which six Hornets reached base safely including two-run doubles from both Kayla St. John and Powell to make it an 8-0 game.
St. John finished the game one victory 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI, adding a two-run homerun in the fifth, her second of the season. Powell had two hits and three RBI and Riley had two hits and two runs scored. Dickens added three base hits and three runs scored, both game highs.
New Paltz State rebounded to take the second game of the twin bill 7-2, behind five strong innings in the circle from starting pitcher Taylor Corwin. Taylor LaFrance stroked a three-run double in the second inning and Danielle Bruno had two hits and two runs scored for the Hawks.
Sophomore Leslie Bourgeois had two hits, including a run-scoring single to center in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to five. Sophomore Conner English tossed 5.2 innings between the two contests, allowing just one hit and striking out six on the afternoon.
Lynchburg (4-4) takes on Capital University in a doubleheader on day two of tournament play. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
