Hornet Softball Splits with Capital at Salisbury Tourney
SALISBURY, MD – The Lynchburg College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader Saturday with Capital University (OH) at the Salisbury University Tournament, losing the first game 2-1 but winning game two 9-0.
The first game was a pitcher's duel between LC's Conner English and the Crusaders Amber Martinelli. Martinelli got a complete-game win, allowing just two hits and one walk while English was the tough-luck loser, giving up four hits and no walks with one earned run.
Capital scored a run in the top of the first, aided by a Lynchburg error and passed ball. Danielle Powell homered in bottom of the fourth to tie the score, but Capital scored the winning run on a sacrifice bunt in the sixth. Powell had both of the Hornet hits and Marisa Koss drove in both runs for CU.
The second game had a much different beginning as LC scored three in the first and three more in the third to put the game quickly out of reach. Kirsten Copley threw a complete-game shutout for Lynchburg, giving up five hits and no walks with four strikeouts. Leslie Bourgeois had three hits and three RBI and Lauren Smith also had three hits. Powell again had a pair of basehits, including a double, and Logan Walker scored twice.
The Hornets (5-5) are scheduled to play Salisbury, ranked #1 in Division III, Sunday at noon in another non-conference twinbill.
