SALISBURY, MD – The Lynchburg College softball team led for most of the opening game Sunday, but dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at 11th-ranked Salisbury University, 12-11 (nine innings) and 4-2.
Danielle Powell went 3-5 with five RBI in the first game, while Mackenzie Chitwood was 2-5 with a double, a home run, two runs and two RBI. Kayla St. John was 2-3 with four runs scored, two RBI and a home run and Leslie Bourgeois was 2-4. Nicole Riley tripled and walked.
Lynchburg scored three in the first, powered by a two-run blast from Chitwood to right center. Powell brought home two runners in the second with a single, and St. John homered as part of a three-run fourth inning to put the Hornets ahead 8-3. The Sea Gulls scored three in the bottom of the fifth, but LC countered with three of its own in the top of the sixth. SU again pushed three runs across in the sixth and forced extra innings with two more in the seventh. Molly Simpson singled for Salisbury in the ninth to end the contest. She finished 4-5 with two runs and three RBI and Paige Knussman had three hits.
Logan Walker doubled in the top of the fourth of game two to give LC a 2-0 lead, but SU scored four in the fifth on a grand slam from Knussman. LC had two runners on the top of the seventh and two outs, but couldn't push across the tying run.
