LC Softball Earns DH Split with Averett
DANVILLE, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Averett University Wednesday, dropping the first game 3-1 and taking the second 6-3.
The Hornets struck first in the opener when junior
Lauren Smith reached base with a one out single in the third inning. Smith advanced to second on a groundout, then to third on a wild pitch with two outs in the frame. Senior
Nicole Riley followed with an RBI single to plate Smith, giving LC a 1-0 advantage. Averett answered with two runs of their own in the fifth, and Skylar Dudley homered in the sixth to secure a 3-1 victory for the Cougars.
Mary Beth Smith allowed one run and struck out eight in the complete game effort for Averett.
Lynchburg was able to salvage the game one loss with a 6-3 victory in game two, due in large part to a five-run third inning. After being held scoreless through two, junior
Kayla St. John singled and advanced to second on a base hit from senior
Danielle Powell with two outs. St. John and Powell came around to score on a consecutive base knocks from
Mackenzie Chitwood and
Logan Walker, giving LC a 2-1 lead.
Leslie Bourgeois added to the frame with a two-out, two-run double, bringing home Chitwood and Walker. Smith provided the fifth two-out hit of the inning with a run-scoring single to center to extend the Lynchburg lead to four.
Sophomore pitcher
Kirsten Copley went the distance in game two, striking out six and allowing just three runs to earn her second win of the season. St. John, Powell, Chitwood and Smith had two hits apiece in the game two victory for the Hornets. Jessica Long had three doubles and scored two runs for the Cougars (4-7).
Lynchburg (3-3) returns to action February 11 in the Salisbury University Tournament with a doubleheader against New Paltz St. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m.
