Hornet Softball Sweeps Randolph in ODAC Opener
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Wednesday, sweeping a doubleheader at Randolph College 9-5 and 7-3.
The Hornets opened a 7-0 lead in game one and hung on for the win. Brittany Coffey started the second frame with a single, and Leslie Bourgeois followed with a single. Amy Bresson walked to load the bases and a run scored on a fielder's choice. Kayla St. John singled to put LC ahead 2-0.
The Hornets scored three more in the fourth. Following a WildCat error, St. John doubled to bring home LC's third run. Two runs would later score in the frame, one when Logan Walker was hit with a pitch with the bases loaded and another on an error.
St. John drove in her third run of the game in the fifth and Danielle Powell had an RBI single to make the score 7-0. RC rallied with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, fueled by five hits and a walk. Lynchburg plated two more insurance runs in the seventh, on RBI singles from Coffey and Skylar Dickens.
Conner English earned the win for LC, working 6 1/3 innings and allowing no earned runs and just three hits with seven strikeouts.
Lynchburg scored three runs in the third and two in the fourth of the second game. St. John doubled to plate a run and Walker hit a two-run single for LC in the third. Nicole Riley singled to score another run in the fourth and St. John singled to make it a 6-0 game in the sixth. The WildCats pushed a run across in the sixth, but LC countered with a run in the seventh off a pinch-hit single from Jess Riquelme. Randolph scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh.
St. John, Riley and Bresson each had two hits for Lynchburg and Mackenzie Chitwood had a hit and a walk. English had her second win of the day, giving up just one earned run while tossing a complete game. Four Randolph (11-7/0-2 ODAC) players had two hits apiece.
Lynchburg (7-7/2-0 ODAC) hosts second-ranked Emory University (GA) Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in a non-conference twinbill.
