LC Softball Takes #2 Emory to Extra Innings
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team forced extra innings Thursday in a game two of a doubleheader with the second-ranked team in NCAA Division III, Emory University (GA), but fell 5-1 in eight innings. EU also took the first game 8-0 in five innings.
Brittani File threw a no-hitter in the first game for Emory, walking three with eight strikeouts. The Eagles pushed across a run in the first inning and three more in the second to take an early 4-0 lead. Emory scored four in the top of the fourth to take a commanding 8-0 edge.
Logan Walker walked twice for LC. Emory's Alyssa Pollard went 2-3 with a double, two runs scored and four RBI.
The nightcap was scoreless through the first three innings, after LC had a runner called out at home in the bottom of third. EU scored a single run in the fourth, but LC shortstop Nicole Riley threw an Eagle runner out at home in the fourth and sixth innings to keep it a one-run game.
Lynchburg tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Kayla St. John led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a wild pitch. She later scored on suicide squeeze bunt from Brittany Coffey.
Emory (27-1) plated four runs in the eighth inning after loading the bases with no outs. LC had two runners on in the bottom of the eighth, but couldn't cut into the lead. Pollard was 3-4 with two runs scored, and File again picked up the win, raising her record to 21-1 on the year.
St. John had two hits for LC, and Jess Riquelme walked twice. Conner English threw all eight innings for Lynchburg, allowing just two earned runs and seven hits.
The Hornets (7-9) travel to Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader at 2 p.m.
