Women's Lacrosse Rally Falls Just Short at W&L 13-12
Lexington, VA— The Lynchburg College women's lacrosse team had a strong second half to nearly defeat Washington and Lee University on Saturday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play, but W&L held off the Hornets to capture a 13-12 victory.
The Hornets and W&L traded goals at the beginning of the first half, until W&L went on a five-goal run to take a 7-2 advantage with eight minutes left in the half. LC scored the next three goals to make it 7-5. In the final minutes of the half Lynchburg and Washington and Lee traded goals and W&L scored in the final two seconds to make it 9-6 going into halftime.
LC came out strong in the second half and scored the first two goals to make it 9-8 with 20 minutes to go. W&L scored three goals to make it 11-8,
Alison Truman scored with 18 minutes left to put the Hornets within two, but the Generals scored another two to go up by four again. LC surged back with goals coming from
Maddie Koontz,
Caroline Carozza, and
Laura Meisner to make it 13-12 with a little over two minutes to play. The Hornets were not able to get another shot on goal to even the score.
Lynchburg had seven players score, with Meisner and
Kat Francis leading with three goals apiece. Koontz found the back of the net twice, while
Alexa Carey,
Sarah Suter, Carozza, and Truman each had one. Meisner and Carozza each dished out one assist and
Rachel Henderson scooped up three groundballs and caused two turnovers. Francis had five draw controls for LC, while Suter had three and Meisner had two.
Treva Tyson had a strong performance in goal with 11 saves.
Jess Castelo, Haley Tucker, and Olivia Sisson had three goals apiece to lead Washington and Lee (4-5/2-0 ODAC). Maddy Graves added two goals, two groundballs, and one caused turnover, while Melissa Coggins had a game-high six assists. Caroline Hutchinson picked up four groundballs and Tucker had two.
The Hornets (4-3/0-1 ODAC) will return back to action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to face Hollins University at 4:30 p.m.
