LC Softball Splits Pair at Guilford

GREENSBORO, NC – The Lynchburg College softball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Sunday at Guilford College, dropping the first game 5-2 but taking game two 14-5 in five innings. A 10-game LC winning streak was snapped in the opener.

Kayla St. John doubled to open game one and Danielle Powell singled to bring her home. Guilford tied the game in the third with a run, but LC opened a 2-1 edge in the fifth as Skylar Dickens tripled and St. John delivered an RBI single. The Quakers scored a single run in the sixth and Caroline Barnette had a walk-off two-out three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh.

St. John, Powell and Dickens each had two hits for LC. Laura Hall and Brooks Bray had three hits apiece for Guilford. Courtney Lackey earned a complete-game win for GC, allowing six hits and two earned runs.

Lynchburg exploded for six runs in the first inning of the nightcap. Mackenzie Chitwood hit a two-run home run and Leslie Bourgeois hit a three-run home run later in the frame. Guilford scored twice in the bottom of the inning, but Amy Bresson hit a grand slam in the top of the second for a 10-2 LC lead.

Casey Snead hit a three-run bomb for the Quakers in the third to cut the lead to 10-5, but LC countered with four more runs in the top of the fourth and rolled to the five-inning win. Kirsten Copley picked up the complete-game win in circle.

Lynchburg (18-12/7-3 ODAC) travels to Shenandoah University Wednesday for another ODAC doubleheader, starting at 5 p.m.
