Coach Dawn Simmons Earns 500th Win as Softball Sweeps SU
LYNCHBURG, VA – Head coach Dawn Simmons earned her 500th career win Wednesday night in a 9-2 victory over Shenandoah University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play. The Hornets also took game one earlier in the day 10-1 to earn the doubleheader sweep. It is Simmons' 18th season as the head mentor at LC after a stellar three-sport playing career at the school.
Lynchburg got on the board early in game one, scoring four runs in the opening frame. With two on and one out, first baseman
Mackenzie Chitwood lined a run-scoring single to right center to give the Hornets the early lead. Following an infield error to bring home the second Lynchburg run, second baseman
Leslie Bourgeois delivered a two-out, two-run single to right center to give LC a 4-0 advantage.
After tacking on a run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly to right from
Amy Bresson, the Hornets put the game away in the fourth, taking advantage of three Shenandoah errors.
Nicole Riley and
Danielle Powell hit consecutive singles to open the frame, and advanced into scoring position with two outs. Coffey followed with a two-run double to right and came around to score on an infield error. After an infield hit by Bourgeois,
Skylar Dickens reached on an error to bring home Bresson and extend the Hornet lead to eight.
Megan Wilks homered for Shenandoah (8-22, 2-10) in the game one loss. Connor English allowed one run on two hits to earn the win for Lynchburg and
Brittani Piazza tossed two scoreless innings in relief. Powell had three hits including a double and scored three runs for the Hornets in the opener.
The Hornets were able to continue their first inning success in game two, posting four runs in the top of the first.
Kayla St. John lead-off with a triple to right and later scored on an infield error. Following the second SU error of the inning to put runners on second and third with one out,
Logan Walker lined a single to right center to bring home the second Hornet run. After a walk to Coffey to load the bases, Bresson delivered an RBI groundout and Dickens brought home the fourth run of the frame with an infield single to score Walker.
In the home half of the inning, Shenandoah answered with two runs on RBI singles from Karli Rorabaugh and Haley Koeninger to cut the LC lead to two. In the top of third, Coffey and Bresson reached on errors and Bourgeois capitalized with a run-scoring single to left center. After an infield hit by Dickens, Bresson scored on a wild pitch and Riley followed with a triple to right to bring home Bourgeois to give the Hornets a five run lead.
Kirsten Copley struck out two in three innings of relief in the game two victory. Bourgeois was a perfect 5-5 at the plate in the doubleheader, driving in five runs on the night.
Lynchburg (20-12, 9-3) continues ODAC play Saturday, hosting Bridgewater College for a doubleheader set to begin at 1:30 p.m. The program's three seniors will be honored on Senior Day.
