Hornet Softball Sweeps Bridgewater on Senior Day
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team swept an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Saturday against visiting Bridgewater College, 10-0 in game one and 9-1 in the second contest, both in five innings. The program's three seniors were honored in a pre-game ceremony and head coach Dawn Simmons was presented a plaque by LC President Dr. Ken Garren commemorating her 500th career win.
The Hornets started the afternoon off strong with eight runs in the bottom of the first inning. Lynchburg had 12 players come to the plate in the frame. Nicole Riley drove in three runs with a triple in the inning, Danielle Powell had a two-run single, and Skylar Dickens, Brittany Coffey and Kayla St. John all had run-scoring singles. LC padded the lead with two runs in the third.
Conner English worked three innings for the win, allowing just one hit and Brittani Piazza tossed two scoreless frames in relief. Powell and Dickens each had two hits for Lynchburg.
LC sent five runners home in the second inning of the nightcap. Dickens laced an RBI double with one out, and Riley followed with a two-run single. Powell and Mackenzie Chitwood each ripped doubles to give Lynchburg a 5-0 lead.
BC scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to cut the advantage to 5-1. The Hornets loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth and scored four times to end the game, aided by three Eagle errors.
Kirsten Copley threw a complete game for LC in the win, allowing four hits, one walk and one earned run. Riley and Leslie Bourgeois each had two hits.
The Hornets (22-12/11-3 ODAC) will travel to Eastern Mennonite University Sunday for another ODAC doubleheader at 1:30 p.m. Bridgewater falls to 7-25 overall and 2-12 in ODAC play.
