LC Softball Drops Pair of One Run Games to EMU

HARRISONBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Eastern Mennonite University Sunday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play, 7-6 and 4-3.

The Hornets trailed 6-1 after five innings in the opener, but rallied to even the game at six with five runs on five hits in the top half of the sixth.  Brittany Coffey led off the frame with a double to right and after Amy Bresson was hit by a pitch, Skylar Dickens singled to right to load the bases with one out for Kayla St. John.  The Hornet third baseman answered with a two-run to single to right center to cut the deficit to three.  With runners on the corners, shortstop Nicole Riley followed with a bunt single to score Dickens, and Danielle Powell completed the Hornet comeback with a two-run triple to right.

EMU held Lynchburg scoreless in the top half of the seventh, and escaped with a walk-off win in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from right fielder Aislinn Lucas.  Lucas had two hits and drove in three for the Royals.  Danyele Smith had two hits and scored four runs.

Mackenzie Chitwood homered in the game one loss, while Riley, Powell, Coffey, Dickens and Leslie Bourgeois each registered two hits for the Hornets.

Lynchburg jumped out to an early lead in the second game of the afternoon, scoring two runs in the top of the first.  St. John leadoff the game with a double to left and scored on a sacrifice fly from Powell.  Chitwood followed with her second home run of the day, a solo shot to right.

Coffey extended the Hornet lead to three in the top of the third with an RBI single to left to score St. John, who walked to lead off the inning.  The Royals battled back to tie the game at three with two runs in the fourth and a single tally in the fifth while holding the Lynchburg offense scoreless.  EMU (27-11, 13-5) plated the eventual winning run in the bottom of the sixth when Jasmine Johnson lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Lucas.

Lynchburg (22-14, 11-5) returns to action Tuesday, traveling to the University of Mary Washington for a non-conference doubleheader.  First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
