Hornet Softball Splits at Mary Washington
FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at the University of Mary Washington, winning the first game 3-1 but dropping game two 6-5 in nine innings.
Nicole Riley singled for LC in the top of first of the opener and later scored on a groundout. Kayla St. John singled and scored in the second inning, and singled and scored again in the fourth on a hit from Amy Bresson.
The Eagles scored an unearned run in the fifth, but couldn't close the gap any further. Kirsten Copley earned the win in the circle, scattering six hits. Conner English worked three innings of perfect relief, striking out four. St. John and Bresson each had two hits.
Erin Stinson allowed just one earned run with no walks and six hits for UMW.
Brittany Coffey got the Hornet offense untracked in the nightcap with a two-run double in the first inning and Riley hit a two-run single in the second to put the Hornets ahead 4-0.
The Eagles scored four in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game, the big hit was a two-run triple from Zoie Patrick. Mackenzie Chitwood hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth for a 5-4 LC lead, but UMW won the gamewith a Stefannie Asselanis two-run double.
St. John had three hits in game two, and Leslie Bourgeois and Bresson each had two.
The Hornets (23-15) travel to Randolph-Macon College Saturday for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference twinbill at 1:30 p.m.
