LYNCHBURG, VA – Freshman catcher Mackenzie Chitwood homered in each game Saturday to power the Lynchburg College softball team to a 5-3, 3-2 doubleheader sweep of Roanoke College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
The Hornets got the offense untracked quickly in the opener with three runs in the first. Chitwood delivered a two-run blast to left field to bring home two runs. The Maroons answered in the top of the second, scoring three off home runs from Becca Wenger and Jordan Meador.
Skylar Dickens doubled with two outs in the sixth, and Kayla St. John lofted a two-run home run to left center to give Lynchburg a 5-3 lead. Conner English sent Roanoke down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.
English worked 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Chitwood and Brittany Coffey were each 2-3.
Ruthie Williams hit two doubles for Roanoke.
The nightcap was scoreless for both teams through three full innings. Roanoke struck for a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, on a Katie Smith home run. Danielle Powell singled in Lynchburg's half of the inning and Chitwood followed with another two run home run to tie the game.
A Roanoke error helped LC score the winning run in the sixth, and Logan Walker singled to give the Hornets a 3-2 lead. The Maroons had a runner on base with two outs in the seventh with a chance to tie the game or take the lead, but English ended the game with a strikeout.
Walker had two hits in the second game for Lynchburg. English earned her second win out of the bullpen on the afternoon, working 3 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit and no runs.
The Hornets (11-11/4-2 ODAC) will host William Peace University Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
